The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) introduced a plate-shaped icon on June 2, 2011 to replace the 20-year-old food pyramid. The plate is meant to be a healthier guideline for how to eat in appropriate portions, including larger amounts of fruits and vegetables. The new design, called MyPlate, was conceived as a crucial part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s campaign against obesity. The Choose My Plate website has some fantastic resources, search options, and food facts:
As we think about what our own plate might look like, we are reminded that the plates of others are often empty. Help fill the plates of those seeking assistance at Metro CareRing:
- Fruits: HOPE looks like Canned Fruit
- Vegetables: HOPE looks like Canned Mixed Vegetables, Hearty Soup (Vegetarian)
- Protein: HOPE looks like Canned Tuna, Canned Cooked Beans (pinto, black, refried), Hearty Soup (Meat), Peanut Butter
Food donations are accepted Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the door marked Deliveries behind the Metro CareRing building at 18th and Downing (1100 E. 18th Avenue Denver, CO 80203). For more information on donating pantry items, please call Pantry Staff at 303-350-3663.
Day 3. Dollar 3.
We pray today, Lord, for those whose plates are far from full. Amen.
